My goodness, you guys first time painters are crazy!
This just goes to show that you just gotta try it before seeing what you can do,
so for those first time painters out there who's feeling a bit under par, look
at what these guys have done with their first paintings! *point point*
JUST TRY IT!
Anyways, don't mind my random motivational speech crap, I'm just soo excited to
see people trying out doing painty stuff outside of their comfort zone and
joining the contest - BRING IT ON!

For the free version of ArtRage, some of the features like the airbrush,
paint-tube, glitter paint tools aren't available, and some of the settings for
the available tools aren't available. And also, the free version doesn't have
layers... But it's not that expensive (compared to Adobe)... but first I must
get a tablet
OpenCanvas 1.1 is very basic. There's
the paintbrush, erase, smudge, layers, and some deforming tools (well at least
it has layers).
I wanna try out Painter... looking at Tama's tutorial with the blend tool...
*drools*
Speaking of the contest, I think we need more entries
Quote by bromithiaAre the results for

I suppose so, since candy is chief judge alongside
mick.
Well, before we talk about results, should really talk about getting more
submissions first

Damn maplerose that's pretty cool Makes
me want to try ArtRage out, although I still gotta really try painter and
opencanvas out... after I finish really playing around in PS CS2 though. Argh
argh argh >__<
When you guys say the free edition, is that like a limited 30 day trial edition,
or does it just have limited capabilities? :3
Artrage works fine for my Genius tablet with the pressure sensitive thing -
though first time using artrage it kinda went on a funny 'offset' when using a
tablet. Reading the change log for version 2.2, apparently this problem is only
recently fixed in the latest version for Mac OSX. But I'm using windows - so ..
no idea what's going on there.
Then I installed it on my laptop with Windows XP and it works just fine, no
funny offset business. Meh..
I wanna wall ...
<-- V-E-R-Y busy atm ..
PS. I've also only tried the free version, thinking of buying the latest version
when I'm a bit more available to actually do something with it ..

Ah I just got ArtRage2 (the free version because I'm broke), and it's the
coolest painting program ever! I love the tracing function, and esp the
paintbrush, it's like oil painting with a computer! (ah I miss my
oils...)
so I played around with it and came up with something random and quick:
yeah the lines are wobbly 'cause my mouse is unsteady.. those of you with
tablets and have used ArtRage, does it respond to different pressure?
The big difference between painter and photoshop is that Photoshop is really
made to edit images, though when used in digital coloring it is very simple
wherein to create effects like painter would mean modifying your brushes a lot,
its downside in digital painting is that it doesn't blend colors nor does it
offer a lot of coloring tools. On the other hand, Painter has color blending and
of course a lot of tools to color with (though I find it quite annoying). Its
image adjustment would be its major downside plus its not much user friendly
unlike Photoshop which is easier to grasp.
For my personal choice of the two, I prefer using photoshop more because you can
produce a Painter like look on Photoshop and there are a lot things that you can
achieve in Photoshop that cannot be copied by Painter. Though when I do digital
paintings I use both.
Whoa 95% painting options? That's massive!
Sounds very .. daunting .. yet sounds like if you can master it, man, you prolly
can hold the world in your hands..
I *think* ArtRage provides Paint Thinners option too --> smudge+blend with
colours underneath, which is a cool feature. Though for noob painters like me
blending would be easier to work with (to cover mistakes ^^;) where thinning
would be nice if you've got your painting sorted before you even began brushing.
Sounds fun though, definitely worth trying.
Painter sounds too good to be missed, I'll have to give it a spin one of these
days ..
Thanks for the heads up Tama, it's nice to hear REAL user experience compared to
Google reviews which could be rigged - who knows.
Painter is scary. Photoshop has lots of options but they're spread out in a
hundred directions - stuff for painting, stuff for fixing photos, stuff for
filters, stuff for color adjustments, etc.
In Painter, 95% of your options relate to brushes. There are just SO MANY
CHOICES. Each brush acts different and it's hard to get a handle on what brush
type you need to use to achieve the effect you want - at least for someone like
me who has had very little natural media experience, so I have no idea the
difference between oil pastel on paper versus oil paint on paper, much less how
to expect them to act on digital canvas. I hit upon watercolor as being a fun
brush and so I haven't worked much with any of the other sets of brushes except
for blenders, which are like 100x smoother than Photoshop's smudge tool. Smudge
just moves color around in a limited fashion, but blenders really do blend the
color underneath your brush so it's just a cleaner feel and interface.
But seriously, I have been getting into Painter a LOT recently (I have 9) and it
is massively fun.
I will if you give me something like US$400 to buy it! ^^;
I'm curious about it too actually. Kind of funny with Painter, all of the
reviews I read everyone -dreads- it - bad user interface, clunky, massive
learning curves just to operate the thing, etc. But seeing the results, it's
definitely a powerful tool and definitely definitely has the capability of doing
wonders - which is why it's so massively popular amongst the hardcore digital
artists.
Something worth investing time and money on? Your guess is as good as
mine.
Mind you, I came across a free 30-day trial version of Painter 9.5 on their
website not too long ago if you want to give it a try
Can't remember how I began looking for free/cheapo painting software, but I came
across a couple of notable 'almost free' graphic packages dedicated to painting
that look quite promising and seem to have attracted a decent size community
followers, which are:
First impression - kickass droolworthy user interface.
Really, I've never seen a user interface as clean, sleek and intuitive as this
for a program that's not your usual children's toy. Don't expect photoshop,
think natural painting - limited but workable features. I've only given it a
quick 15-30mins trial run on the free version, but I'm definitely coming back
for more!
Check it out if you're looking for a budget painting program.
Check the website for impressive gallery and reviews. Or Google.
Free version available with limited features.
Full version sells at US$19.95.
Seems to be the popular choice for anime artists - no wonder, look at their
website!
Made in Japan and translated for English audience - be prepared for some
beautifully powerful engrish
This one resembles a bit closer to Photoshop though it's still a lot simpler.
Didn't strike me as strongly as ArtRage, but I've only spent a few minutes with
it with it, so I'm coming back to investigate more.
Not to mention I'm hanging to try out the recording/playback feature which
allows the audience to follow each stroke of the painters' brush - how cool is
that?! Check out samples of these recordings in YouTube.com, just key in
'opencanvas'.
Free 30-day trial.
Older version OpenCanvas 1.1 is free for download - just Google, didn't take me
long to find it.
Full versions sell from about US$50 if my conversion is right - see their
website for more details.
