ooh I wanna see your finished book too mick, even if it's just a glimpse

Reply to MapleRose
Oh my goodness people are calling me in the net as mick or micky. *faints*
I'm Michael guys or just plain mic. Anyway, whatever. *sigh*

The book is not yet finished. What do you want to see anyway? If you want the illustrations then go to my DA, Gfxartist or renderosity account. I update it every finished illustration. If the story, a lot of people are revising it for me at the moment. So please bear with me and those kind hearted people who volunteered to clean up/fix my non-poetic writing style. The story is long btw it is more than 45 pages.

Anyways I still have 21 more illustrations to go that should be done by Jan. 10.
By then I'll be blind and sooner dead.

Jaa~

P.S. If you want to see my latest painted work proceed here Requiem Reprise
It is not included in my book though or here in MT.

Such a perfect scan for the theme eh? *winks* :D

LOL yeah I think I downloaded that scan a while back. It IS lovely... I gotta say work is finally kicking in for me though, and since I've been running around to places returning and buying stuff, and I'm making myself cook everyday... I don't get to dinner until around 9, 10pm. After which I'm just pooped.

Anyhow enough of that, I know most digital artists on devART tend to paint on one layer. I've only done rough airbrushing type of painting so far, since my laptop would explode otherwise... but the cool thing about making an "error" if you paint in a slightly rougher style is that you can always just paint/erase over it. Or go a couple steps back :3

ooh I wanna see your finished book too mick, even if it's just a glimpse :)

As for layers, just like almost everything in art, I don't think there is a 'right' or 'wrong' way of painting, it's just personal preference and finding what works for you I guess.

For me, except for vectoring, I hardly ever separate the layers by colour. I tend to separate them more by subject and the area I'm painting in (like hair, clothes, background etc), esp when I'm colouring doujinshi digitally. I think when I start using layers, I get a sort of dependance on it, whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, I'm not sure. But I do it because I'm lazy ^_^'.

For example, I almost always do the skin and hair on two layers, because then I don't have to be neat on the outlines of the skin layer because the hair layer goes on top and covers the edges anyways. Same with the background. I can be lazy an not be neat around the edges where the character meets the background because the messy part can be covered by overlaying layers. I think I esp like to do this since I'm really unsteady with a mouse, so I guess I can hide mistakes better this way ^_^' But the actual shading and highlighting of the elements I usually put on the same layer as the base colour, especially if I want to use the smudge, dodge, burn, lighten or darken (I rarely use the last four tools though). Though if there are parts of the hair say that are different colours, I'll usually use a new layer to prevent unwanted blending. Another way I cut down on layers is to use one layer for elements that are not touching, like for example I'll put a scarf and pants on the same layer if they're apart in the picture.

Also, like the wall I did for the contest, I did the cliff part and the background on separate layers, because they're not supposed to blend together (and the sharpness, texture are different as well). That way, it's much easier to modify the one part or the other. Also, using separate layers makes hue and contrast adjustments much easier. I've seen some tutorials use a new layer for every single colour for this reason.

With traditional art, it's easier even without layers because my hand is steadier with a brush or pencil. and like you said, layers make undoing things and changing things (and fixing things like edges) much easier. That's why I want the full package of ArtRage, because you get the effects of traditional art, but the advantages of things like undo and layers of digital art :)

So I guess it's a matter of preference. But I guess you could take some shortcuts and save yourself some pain if you do use layers (esp if you're lazy like me, or change your mind a lot...), but it does make your file size a bigger.. but it is very possible to paint on one layer if your very careful and neat. I suppose another way to do it is to use the magic wand or some sort of selection tool and do one section at a time. In fact, that's the way I started out to colour my doujins, but the result isn't the best, since using the magic wand creates white spots, and since my lineart isn't neat to begin with, it looks even worse this way ^_^'

mick, neat stuff with your latest work, any chance that we get to read/see the whole book when it's finished?

Probably I'll only publish two hard copies of the book for my thesis jury and one for myself. Though a lot have been insisting in deviantart that I should publish it.
Anyway I'm submitting in DA, gfxartist and renderosity my finished illustrations(though I still twitch and update it every once in a while).

About the layer stuff, my last wallpaper/illustration the dragon thing was done on one layer, from sketch to the major coloring. That also goes for a few of my digital paintings but most likely when I started out digital painting which is early this year, I used a lot of layers per part, but as I progress the fewer the layers. It really does not matter if you have a lot layers or not (I prefer doing both single and many anyway). The advantage of a single is that you have lower memory consumption and that you dont have to transfer from one layer to the other. The multiple layers advantage would be that you can control the image more.

Quote: each layer was just a successive fine-tuning of the image and not used to separate colors or sections or image elements

This is the biggest challenge and the biggest out-of-norm routine for me when it comes to painting. I've seen a lot of tutorials work this way and it's just so different to the way I'm used to when dealing with walling e.g. vectoring <-- basically a layer for each thing!
(It doesn't help being a programmer doing things object-oriented way is in my blood LOL! XD)

For my wolf wall I worked in layers - base colours, undercoat, overcoat, face details, snow etc. That was easy since there's no definitive edges between the different objects i.e. doesn't matter if I go a little bit over everything will still blend fine.

But now, I don't know if me using layers is the problem, but I seem to always have problems defining the edges - I either get colours overlapping or I get a white gap - which is bloody annoying. Which perhaps can be helped if I work on one layer *thinks aloud*. Or maybe just my technique sucks and I need to be sent back to kindergarten class..

More comments welcome.

The only painting I've done with multiple layers was my Lagoon Engine "Flight of Fancy" wall, to separate each of the colors (since each color was supposed to be clearly separated by the outlines.) Otherwise, because the colors are supposed to blend together, I tend to work on one layer ("Mountain's Red Leaves" counts here too, because each layer was just a successive fine-tuning of the image and not used to separate colors or sections or image elements.)

ohh icic so it's 'him' referring to the sentence, right, gomen I misunderstood :D

Btw, does anyone have tips or rule-of-thumbs in regards to when or when not to use layers for painting?

I just watched this video tutorial and the guy painted the whole bloody thing on 1 single layer from start to finish! And I'm not talking about a rough sketch, the result is amazing and I both salute and envy the artist for being so super talented.

Suppose sticking with a single layer is closer to traditional painting, but I'm like .. really?
I prefer using layers myself which I think is more forgiving if I make mistakes or easier to add/remove stuff later without affecting the rest. And I'm also crazy about having some 'just in case' measures if I need to undo mistakes or change my mind later. Although the stuff I've done isn't exactly complex or anywhere near as good as what he's got. Makes sense, I'm still uber noob with this stuff.

What do you guys do?
Is one way better than the other, or is it just a matter of personal taste?

That's such a sweet scan maplerose, thanks I'll add it on the list.
Btw, of all people, you've submitted something for the contest and got another painting done in artrage - 'butcher' what? you're already 2 steps ahead of most people here! Go for it, I'm sure you can do great job with that scan! *waves ganbatte flag*

I'd like to propose this for the request gallery please! Ah I think since it's been snowing for the past few days, I got into this wintery romantic mood just watching the snow fall... I'd try to wall it, but I'd probably butcher it with my painting skills ^_^'

jaja I didnt refer you as a he" jaja when I said "his" I was talking about your "just try it" thing ....but guess I did what you said so anyway you freak! (kidding also)

Anooo ... I'm a SHE
But I'll forgive you for confusing my gender since you've worked hard for that painting.
And for doing what I said *mwahahaz*.. (just kidding :D)
Welcome aboard :)

mick, neat stuff with your latest work, any chance that we get to read/see the whole book when it's finished?

so I'm not going to participate in the opening contest...candy just struck me with that theme, but guess the "JUST TRY IT!" of supermonchi did his job....and so I did with this wall that I want you to look at, like a present, a gift with music. here it is Wallpaper
jaja before you start to criticize the model first look at the painting stuff yai?

Considering Candy's list of series includes Rurouni Kenshin, Peacemaker Kurogane, and Kaze Hikaru, all which feature Shinsengumi characters as major characters, I would venture to say they're okay. In the original contest thread, I think she mentioned adding Kazu Hikaru because it was late Edo/early Meiji and thus squeaks by as being allowable.

My latest painted wall (thesis wall) CT: C1 P3 Ermintrude by mickyoko

Ughh I don't know the answer to that since candy is away and I'm just here doing the houseworks for the group.

BUT - judging the way she set the examples of what counts and what doesn't, I think there's a big element in the requirement for 'appropriate' costumes - whether or not you can tell that the setting of your wall is from those feudal eras or ancient jap periods without actually knowing anything from the series itself.

For example, candy mentioned the reason why Ginko from Mushishi doesn't count is because his clothing doesn't place him in the ancient times even if the story was set in that era. I haven't seen/read Mushishi but I do agree with this point, that Ginko by himself can be placed at any time setting, ancient or modern, so it's fair enough if he doesn't count.

So with your shinsengumis, if you think people can tell they're from those feudal eras within few seconds, then I think they should be fine.

Hope that sorta helps ..
Come back if you're still unclear, maybe someone else here can help.
Good luck! ^^

On the side, continuing on flyin's comment, I reckon painted anime is really cool!
If anything it's edgy and unique, stands out from the rest :)

Somewhat nostalgic of my childhood experience painting DBZ () using watercolour on paper for school art & craft homeworks and a couple with oil on canvas for fun. Along with my trustee crayons - oh who doesn't like crayons before the new set of teeth come about? LOL! XD

Traditional medium was heaps of fun though I didn't do very much of it at all. But I think I much much prefer digital since it's a lot more forgiving when you make mistakes as well as great for noobs like myself to trial and error diff techniques, which all comes down to letting me focus more on the art itself rather than dealing with the medium hassles.

Anyways, new better/faster/meaner graphic packages will keep popping up, so I reckon it's just a matter of what you're most comfortable using and doing wonders with. I often get curious to learn new packages etc to see how I can improve my works, but I just have to keep reminding myself that my creativity should be what's driving the technology, and never the other way around.

(random rambles)

question: Can I use shinsengumis for the contest? o.o
they lived at the end of the edo period

Everyone's submissions are awesome x_x Aaah, I would try Painter or maybe Open Canvas, but there's no room left on my computer *argh*

This kind of reminds me of a bit of a debate I got in with Shinn a while back... he thought that Painter is cool, but not so much for anime walling purposes because of the styles... since Painter is supposed to produce a more "actual painting" sort of look. I guess until you've achieved a high level of expertise with Painter that's partially true. This is not to discourage anyone who wants to try out Painter by the way, because I'm definitely one of those people... but also am not going to deny that PS CS2 has an awful lot to offer, and I've only exploited maybe 10-20% of that xD;;

I have OC and Painter waiting on my laptop already =X So yeah I think I'll keep ArtRage in mind, but who knows when I'll actually get around to trying all these different programs out xD;;

My goodness, you guys first time painters are crazy!
This just goes to show that you just gotta try it before seeing what you can do, so for those first time painters out there who's feeling a bit under par, look at what these guys have done with their first paintings! *point point*
JUST TRY IT!

Anyways, don't mind my random motivational speech crap, I'm just soo excited to see people trying out doing painty stuff outside of their comfort zone and joining the contest - BRING IT ON!

... lol >_>

For the free version of ArtRage, some of the features like the airbrush, paint-tube, glitter paint tools aren't available, and some of the settings for the available tools aren't available. And also, the free version doesn't have layers... But it's not that expensive (compared to Adobe)... but first I must get a tablet :D

OpenCanvas 1.1 is very basic. There's the paintbrush, erase, smudge, layers, and some deforming tools (well at least it has layers).

I wanna try out Painter... looking at Tama's tutorial with the blend tool... *drools*

Speaking of the contest, I think we need more entries ;)

Quote by bromithiaAre the results for the contest going to be out when candy-chan gets back on Christmas?

I suppose so, since candy is chief judge alongside mick.

Well, before we talk about results, should really talk about getting more submissions first :)
