I finally emerge from hiding with my Marimite season 3 review. Man oh man I have
a lot of catching up to do, how many friggin' reviews did I miss not reading?
Procrastination you have won this round.
just finished Aria, it's so... cute ^^ and I love Neo Venezia, since I've been
to Venice, and it's such a pretty city. though it's kinda weird that they have
all this advanced technology, yet they heat their homes with traditional wood
fireplaces

davidh. and about your answer to shoujoboy's question, when you review say, the
second season, since it's a direct sequel to the first season, would it be fair
to do some comparisons with the first season and judge accordingly (like,
"compared to season 1, this season wasn't up to par" etc), or does it
have to be completely separate as a standalone
thing?
Yes, I do if there is a reasonable or valid comparison to be made. I try to keep
any comparisons specific and provide examples, rather than a general opinion
such as "the second season wasn't as good as the first season". For
example in my Kaleido Star reviews, I make the point about the climax of the
second season (the Angel's Manoeuvre) not having as much dramatic impact, in my
opinion of course, as the first season (the Legendary Manoeuvre) and the reasons
behind that statement. Any scoring, however, I try to leave to the individual
merits of the season but a small bias may be introduced as I find my
"enjoyment" of the season reduced slightly, and it is at that point
the question of whether the season was "up to par" is made.

Quote by shoujoboyAh yes I meant to ask
the opinion of the MT review crew. What is your preference when it comes to
reviewing additional seasons or sequels? Is it best to review all seasons of a
property (assuming they are direct sequels and not spinoffs) as one viewing
experience in general, or is it best to break them down into seasons? I've
typically gone with review the whole thing but I'm just wondering since I'll be
soon reviewing Marimite season 3 and I don't know whether to do a new one or
just go back and tweak the old one. Any input (except for Jaks... kidding) is
welcome.
My preference is to look at seasons of a show on a number of issues:
1. Is each season discrete - i.e. it can stand on its own merits;
2. Was there a substantial gap in the local release schedule - i.e. concurrent
release or a decent gap between seasons; and
3. Did each season have closure - i.e. having a clear finish to the season and
not have the expectation of a further installment.
If I can answer "Yes" to each, then I would tend to do separate
reviews for each season and provide a link to the previous season/s in any
preface statements to the review. The advantage I find with separate reviews is
it often coincides with a particular retail product (set of DVDs or a
collection) that other readers can also associate (e.g. Kaleido Star box set).
It also enables a particular season to be treated separately (e.g. I really
enjoyed season 1 of Kaleido Star, but found season 2 not quite hitting the mark
as well). I can then provide comments and scoring accordingly and not penalise a
"good" season being followed by something mediocre.

Quote by MapleRosequestion for anyone
who can answer: is it okay if I review a novel adaptation that's not finished?
'cause I want to review the novels for Gundam SEED, but only 3/5 volumes are in
English (and unfortunately that's probably as much as it'll ever be since
Tokyopop stopped licensing it TT.TT). But since it's adapted from the anime, I
know the story/plot/character already. So could I review based on the 3
volumes?
I recall Shinsengumi had some comments about this a while ago (FAQs for Reviews
- just checked). Correct me if I'm wrong, but reviews on a partially-released
title aren't encouraged. However, if you make it clear that the review is
limited to specific volumes because (as in this case) the English translation
only covers Volumes 1 to 3, then a review on
that part that has been released could be submitted. This position then
makes it obvious to other readers (and other language releases) that the review
is constrained by circumstances beyond the reviewer's control.
If it's another season, I'd keep it
within the same review, esp if it's a direct continuation of the story, and they
kept the same name (eg Kaleido Star, Tsubasa RC). But if it's another sequel
series (esp if they changed the name or something), I'd make a new review (eg
Gundam SEED/Gundam SEED Destiny).

Good points and certainly noted. I would also like to add I saw your comment on
my Code Geass review and I feel quite pwned. Based on your comments I feel like
I would be just as easily entertained by a cup and ball...

Technically either is acceptable but the choice of which largely depends on the style
of the reviewer and the series being reviewed. I, for example, would not write
an entirely new review for a specific season unless it is significantly different stylistically from the rest
of the series in multiple respects (plot, art, sound, general presentation, etc.
Otherwise, making addenda to the relevant sections of the relevant reviews and
adjusting scores is more appropriate than writing a new review, of which much of
the information is likely to be redundant.
The one drawback to editing a past review is that it does not get advertised on
the front page as new reviews do, but advertising in your signature is a good
way around this. You could also just write a new consolidated review and delete
your now-obsolete past review. Just a thought.
Doesn't it make you sick when you see that? I mean wasn't there one person who
put down "Manga doesn't have sound :-)" and gave it a 10. Reading is
fun!

I'm seriously going to tear my hair out the next time someone leaves the Sound
section blank (and assigns an arbitrary, and usually high, score) in a manga
review.
Anyhow, long time no see everyone! I love the new layout...I have no idea when
that happened. (Has been busy with summer school).
*currently in a good mood because of a helpful comment from shinsengumi*
The sun will come out tomorrow! You ever been so happy someone could punch you
in the chest and you just say ouch but smile the whole time? Or your dog could
die and you'd just respond with "well that sucks" but not really feel
any pain? That's me right now. Today was supposed to be the last Marimite
episode and now they give me news of a season 4? I love all of you... you know
that. *skips away*
Oh and Gun X Sword, Tsukuyomi and Code Geass fortcoming in the future.
I know what you mean, my report is due in a few days, but I don't wanna work on
it. I want to do anything but the report DX ...

yay finished the report, and can write that S7 review now, as soon as I finish
the article for MTM, the wallpaper(s) for which?waller, and my doujinshi that's
been sitting on my computer for the past few days.
Am loving RomeoxJuliet. as soon as it finishes (whenever that will be..) I'm
writing a review ^^
Out of curiosity, why was kawaiiguy booted from this group? He
was one of the first members, and even though he's no longer active (which, I
must say, has been the case for me as well), he certainly wrote quite a number
of very good reviews. Even
if he can't be properly added back to the member roster, perhaps he can be
placed back on the staff roster with his former title of "Grammar
Whore" in recognition of his past efforts.
That said, I just want to note that I am thinking of cooking up a review or two
of some current series, e.g. Seirei no Morbito (once the category gets
created).

Funny how now, with the deadline for my graduate thesis bearing down upon me, I
feel like writing just about anything but the thesis.
yay just finished watching Samurai 7 (even though I should be working on my work
report >.> ... ). I'll write a review for it soon, after I stop
procrastinating and work on that stupid report (which is due in 4 days.. ahhhh!
>__< )
Just randomly stumbled across this page, once again ^^
How MTM can help this group?
Well, seeing you don't want more members (staying invite only) you can still
request to advertise the group (group avatar) to get page hits- so that's not a
problem. Whether or not they apply for the group is their problem- what matters
if you want to accept them or not- which is up to you guys.
If you ever get a project we can toss it up.
Last but not least, group nominations *cough cough cough cough*
