@Shoujoboy - Lol - you shouldn't force yourself to watch anime - where's the fun
in that?
As for 800 - o_O zomg - had a bit of time on your hands did you? Unless that's
an exaggeration - I assume it's an exaggeration - it has to be! 800 episodes is just o_O
@MapleRose - haha there's no rush! Seriously, the only reason I've reviewing so
much is because I have a bit of spare time on my hands and am actually able to
watch anime! After a year of watching
virtually nothing at all (except say an ep or two) it's nice to come back
Though... I am quote eager to read your RomeoxJuliet review.
But no pressure .
Seriously. Write when it comes to you, or you know you could do what I do and
type anything and everything that comes to your mind and just cut back on it
later
Hey at least you only lack motivation to write reviews, I lack motivation to
watch anime at all. I game too much and when I'm not I just seem to fritter away
the time. I used to be at least a series a month viewer, now I'm lucky to watch
3 in a year (minus the 4 months in Afghanistan where I watched like 800... so
boring). So I'd venture that my review count isn't going to grow as
exponentially as it was before.
again, you guys beat me in your diligence.. I've been saying that I was gonna
write reviews for RomeoxJuliet and Aria, but between that time and now, Kukuru
already wrote 2 reviews, Rosegirl wrote one, and shoujoboy wrote like 2?
>_____> *feels guilty* ... I just can't seem to get motivated for some
reason.... like, while watching it, I think of so many things I want to say, but
then I stare at the blinking cursor on a blank page and am like
"uhhh......." ....
Guess who's back again! Yup I'm back with a review of my own. Posted a review
for Ergo Proxy. Seriously guys, after pining over this one for a while I've got
to say this one may be my most personally disappointing review yet. No matter
how many times I typed it up and read it, I just couldn't come up with better.
It actually bothers me quite a bit. All opinions and criticism will be taken
seriously and likely put into action to make this puppy better.
Well beings that I didn't really watch any 2007 animes and I don't read mangas,
it seems kinda pointless. Sure I could vote for Jpop stuff *cough* Nana Mizuki
*cough*, but really it seems kinda unfair to pass judgement on a bunch of stuff
I never experienced. I pretty much spent my entire 2007 playing video games and
watching everyday pass knowing I would soon be done with the military. BYE BYE
2007!
I agree with you shoujoboy, that the popular and the "good" are often
different. However, like Kukuru said, the MT-Mainen is just supposed to be a fun
little thing to see what things MT likes =\ We considered the idea of having a
council selecting the nominations, then have a popular vote, but in the end,
that just became too complicated (who would be considered
"knowledgable"? I don't think anyone has seen every single series to
be able to compare them), and we kinda didn't have enough time ^^;;; We'll see
how it goes, and maybe next time we'll try a different technique if this one
doesn't work
I happen to like tomatoes but I definitely agree. As a reviewer I separate good
series by "mainstream enjoyable" and "fantastic
masterpiece."
Although I was addicted to Bleach for around 80 episodes, I never did like it as
much as I had Inuyasha, Naruto etc in their days. And even those are mediocre in
comparison to a few series that I've been blown away by, such as Fantastic
Children (way to go MapleRose!) and Towards the Terra.
Unfortunately, it seems that such works of art will never get the proper praise
they need.
No no shoujoboy - I see your point entirely. Perhaps - if we want to achieve
that nature of the Oscars there could be a section separate for 'knowledgeable'
people to have their say - as to have a section that is removed of some of the
bias that you mentioned.
That being said - I think the MT Oscars is just meant to be a fun thing where
people just put their votes in, the majority of people's reasoning to be simply
'just because.'
MT Oscars can be for that sort of thing. Reviews on the otherhand should steer
clear away from those sort of extreme fan-ness.
That being said, I hope that idea that only the 'popular' shows will win, won't
stop you from casting your vote. Hey: I'm pretty sure Le Chevalier shan't be
winning any awards even though I think it's the best thing that came out since
sliced bread (X-P maybe that's a wee bit extreme but you get what I mean) I
think it's still good to have my say.
I don't want to be a Negative Nancy or anything, but that MT Oscars thing seems
like a lost cause for a lot of us. Usually awards are determined by some kind of
comittee that knows better than the general public. When you leave awards up to
the general population, you leave yourself open for mob mentality. It just seems
like the awards will go something like:
Best Series: Bleach
Best Female Character: Some chick from Bleach
Best Male Character: Some dude from Bleach
Best OP/ED: Some friggin Bleach song
Etc etc. Of course you can swap Bleach with Naruto, Death Note or whatever it is
the kids are talking about these days. I mean with the Oscars you can get
surpised by best picture or something and end up saying to yourself "Wow I
didn't know it was that good, maybe I should watch it". But I highly doubt
a darkhorse show can win in this situation.
lol, yeah, usually anime adaptations aren't as good as the manga originals (much
like how the movies are usually not as good as the book if the book came first),
esp when it comes to shoujo I think. I love Fruits Basket manga, but the anime
kinda disappointed me... I think it might also have to do with the anime not
even covering the whole story. Action genre adaptations though I found are
better animated 'cause you actually get to see the action played out instead of
the stills captures.
Yeah, I heard about the animation usually being done in Korea. There's usually 2
types of animation, the key frames (the important action scenes) and the
in-betweens. Usually the original studio does the key frames and the in-betweens
done by other studios (often in Korea, as seen in the credits). Most times you
can't tell the difference, but other times you really can, like the case with
Gundam SEED, which is really unfortunate I think >__>
I've read Zodiac PI before - I read it in Korean so I had no idea what it was
(there was a featured chapter in a manwha mag) but later I found out.
This past year I've been reading so many manga but I can't seem to find one to
properly review, since most of them are unfinished. My taste in manga differs
from anime because although plots like Lovely Complex are lovely on paper, it's
not so great on-screen.
As for the Digimon being Korean thing... most anime are sent off to be animated
at least in part in Korea because it's cheaper there... Avatar's animation was
also done in Korea, I think. Although Avatar is American. It's really popular
though - watch it! It's really really really good...better than the average
stuff you see these days.
I agree about what you said about the scouts - though I didn't mind Venus as
much, my friend liked her much more anyways. Hehe as for Chibi - a lot of people
don't like her, but I think it was her character design that appeal to me the
most
Mangas: Lol - I think Alice 19th was also the first manga I ever finished -
which was only just the other day! It was only very recently that I started
reading manga, and out of the 7 titles I've picked up, I've only finished two
(Alice 19th and Cardcaptors). The others was because:
a) They aren't finished (Bleach and FMA)
b) I couldn't find them (Planet Ladder, Scrapped Princess)
c) Or I just couldn't be bothered (Inuyasha - too long DX)
Reading mangas, well I tend to take my time (yes yes, staring at the artwork),
but if it's really good I can normally finish a volume in about an hour or so.
Then I flick back and stare at pictures, wondering if I should drawn them...
I'm also looking or new mangas too - so if anyone has any suggestions - and then
I can read them and review them
Actually, reading the latest review on MT on DGray Man (which btw is INSANELY
long, I mean it's great to see the reviewer has put a lot of time and effort
into their review, but the line has to be drawn somewhere), has gotten me
interested in reading it.
The thing now is to find it...
Oh - and as for non-Jap 'anime', it's interesting to hear Digimon could be
Korean, now that you mention it, I think I've heard that before too. See, I
suppose I could always check on wiki... lol maybe later. As for Avatar: I
haven't watched that yet but I've heard it's great too! Okay, so I've seen a ep
here or there but never really sat down and watched it - too many anime to watch
here!

As for we finally being able to see who you are with your name being visible: it
was kind of fun talking to no-one
Yeah, I liked Sailor Mercury/Ami/Amy the most too, because I was a bit of a
bookworm and knowitall like her I like
Sailor Jupiter too, 'cause she's all cool and not girly or whiny like Serena
Sailor Mars I didn't like too much 'cause she's sometimes arrogant and likes to
argue and is hot-tempered. Sailor Venus, because she came to the group last, I
didn't really pay all that much attention to her ^^;;
I think I actually like Chibi Moon even less than Sailor Moon ^^;;; 'cause I was
10, and found little kids really annoying, and I esp found her meddling with
Serena annoying (even though I didn't like Serena too much to start with, I'd
cheer for her and sympathize with her when they're fighting ). It
also has to do with her dub voice, which is high-pitched and sugary and just,
annoying >___<
Alice 19th is actually the first manga series I've finished reading, since it is
fairly short (bummed it off my friend who has the whole series).
There is a little bit in A
Reviewer's Guide to Minitokyo Reviews about what to put in sound section for
manga reviews. But lol, you're right, I repeat myself by overusing words like
"nice" too (yeah, that word's meaning is really vague nowadays, just
like "cool" and "cute" )
oh, remembering the shoujo series I've read, has anyone read "Zodiac
P.I."? it's this 4-volume series about a girl solving mysteries using the
Zodiac star signs. It's quite cute actually, the art style looks a little bit
like Arina Tanemura's (sorta), and the chibis are just adorable.
how long does it take for you to read a manga? it usually takes me forever, esp for series with pretty and
detailed art (like most shoujo series...). Instead of keep on reading, I sit
there and stare at the art (and the chibis) instead of reading. My friends are
like, "you're still on that page"?! Fruits Basket is esp slow for me,
since I like staring at the art >__< Basara too (I love that manga series,
I can only find up to vol 11 though...)

w00t, I can finally see my name on this layout
Hehe my fav Sailor Scout was Mercury and Chibi Moon. I wasn't a big fan of
Serena either. If I was to watch Sailor Moon for the first time now I'd find it sooo lame. If I ever did watch it
again, because it's my first anime, it holds a somewhat sentimental value in my
eyes, and well, I'd find it amusing - though probably not for the reasons they
were aiming for (for example 'I know the secret identity of the Sailor Scouts!'
good times).
When we got Cardcaptors, I think we got the American version bar the opening and
ending themes - which I'm glad because when I saw then later they were quite
horrible. I'm kind of used to the English dub - but then I haven't seen much of
the Jap version at all (bar the opening and ending themes). If I was to rewatch
Cardcaptors, I'd still like it, but I'd get bored with it after a few eps, so
I'd have to watch odd one here and there.
---
The first manga I ever saw was that of
Sailor Moon - and because I found the style weird (I didn't appreciate her style
much back then) I was turned off all manga. It wasn't until I saw Clamp artworks
that I could begin to see the beauty in manga artworks - and you know, funnily
enough, I think Alice 19th happened to be the first manga I read too - or at
least wanted to read. At that time, there were only fansubs on the net and for
me not even that - just a script translation with no pictures. Still, I wanted
to read it.
- which has made me realize that a reedit in my sound section of Alice 19th was
necessary.
[Really, I think we should perhaps provide some guidelines about what to feature
in good reviews on the front page, especially sound in manga x_X. I was also
thinking perhaps coming up with a word list, because I know I tend to use the
same words to describe things. So much so that, it can can get to a point where
you are reading reviews and words have lost all meaning.
Like nice - what does that mean anymore?! DX]
*cough* I do seemed to get sidetracked don't I?
The first manga series I really started to read was FMA and Bleach. It was only
recently I started getting into manga.
oh yeah, I remember I watched Sailor Moon when I was ten. it was on TV after
school, and it was dubbed, but I liked the pretty eyes and the costumes The
transformation sequence and the repetitiveness didn't bother me back then (though
I did remember I didn't like "Serena" too much). It's also my first
attempt at "fanart", as I remember trying to draw the big anime
eyes.
I also remember watching Saint Seiya (Knights of the Zodiac) when I was little
(maybe 7 or something?), 'cept I didn't remember what series it was or too much
about it, until I watched it again a few years ago and thought, hey, I've seen
this before; this is the series I watched when I was little! I guess that's the
first anime that I remember I watched (there
are probably others that I don't remember the names of or much about).
Oh yeah, I rmemeber watching Cardcaptor Sakura on TV too, it was the dubbed
version, but not the butchered dubbed version . It's
also the first series I've ever watched in Japanese (which was really really
weird at first )
I think I'd still like CCS if I rewatched it (esp the second movie), Sailor
Moon, I'm not sure. Saint Seiya I'd probably find corny now
What's the first manga you've ever read? Mine was... Ah My Goddess I believe.
Found it in the library one day and was shocked they had manga (this was a few
years ago, now the collection's much bigger). It was the flipped version. But I
think the series that really got me into reading manga was actually Alice 19th
^^
Oh btw, I heard that Pokemon (or maybe it was Digimon) is actually Korean, I
think. there's actually a few of these "American anime" out there,
such as Avatar (which is actually not bad), Martin Mystery etc. They look
anime-ish, but are made in the west.

oh yeah, about shoujo, I used to like shoujo a lot, it was most of what I
watched/read (other than Inuyasha). But since Gundam SEED, I started watching
other things, and now, a lot of shoujo is becoming er.... not as interesting as
before
That was what got me hooked onto anime - and Samuari Pizza Cats - please someone tell me they remembered that
show? I loved them! Though of course,
being the first animes to be dubbed America changed them something silly from
names, flipping of scenes to the extreme where the entire jap script of SC was
scrapped and a totally new one written...
Anyways, as I didn't know it was anime back then (because, you know I was 6)
anime watching pretty much stopped until Pokemon came on - yes I'm sad to admit
that I was a Pokemon fan - but then I didn't know it was anime either.
On a side note: I never really got into Digimon... I was always confused whether
or not that was an anime, because sometimes I thought it was just America's
answer to anime... I watch some new American animation now and you can see the
Jap influences (such as the background action scenes etc.). But I suppose anime
had it's influences from Disney (with the big eyes)...
Anyways on my 'rise to anime spiel '
There was also the beginning of anime dubs such as DBZ, Gundam Wing and
Cardcaptors. I loved those too.
It wasn't until I was about 15/16 that I started to discover what anime was
really all about and began finding my own things - even if it was just images,
of course things like 'Adult Swim' helped me to find 'mature' anime (really, why
is Inuyasha in Adult Swim?).
As for opinion changes - ah yes so true: there came a time I would like whatever
anime I could get my hands on just for the simple reason it was anime. Now that
my horizons have been broadened I find myself being much pickier.
Inuyasha was totally my calling into anime... I'd watched Pokemon and all those
Digimon series before, but I started really getting obessessed with
Inuyasha...
There's these phases where you're totally into it, and then you think it's
childish and dumb, but I think that if I rewatch it I'll still like it.
It bothers me that all the kiddie watchers make out Kikyo to be such a
"slut" and a "bitch"...
Fushigi Yuugi along with Shoujo Kakumei Utena were the two series that really
threw me into my "shoujoboy" persona. My friends were always on and
about with Gundam Wing and Dragonball Z and then I went and bought those and
Sakura Taisen one weekend and was like "Hey guys, I got these new shows and
they were awesome" After describing them thats when I got plastered with
shoujoboy. Ahhh I love it. A joke name became my claim to fame... or claim to
lame.
Lol, maybe I'm just weird?! But
yeah, I watched it in the middle of a whole bunch of other series, so I found it
cliche. But one of the main reasons I'm annoyed with it is the melodrama, it's
like watching a soap opera and the constant "Tamahome" "Miaka" shouting doesn't
help... yes, we know those are your names. Thanks.
Hmm, the anime that got me into anime would be... Inuyasha I'd say. I was
obsessed with it. And I still like it to an extent I supposed. Kinda bored with
it after a while though since it just never ends and keeps on repeating itself.
And yes, the whole "Inuyasha" "Kagome" shouting annoys me as
well. Maybe it's 'cause I saw Inuyasha first than FY that I found FY annoying
(even though FY was made first, and it could be said that Inuyasha copied FY)
^^;;
Funny how your opinion changes over time. Maybe one day when I'm really bored
(and I mean really bored), I might
rewatch something like Fushigi Yuugi to see if my opinion has changed or not....
But I'm kind of the type of person who either really loves something and gets
obsessed with it *coughgundamseedcough* or really dislike it and don't want to
give it a chance for opinion to change ^^;;;

Lol, you're talking about Nuriko, right? you're not the only
one, it took me a while to get used to that as well... But nowadays, lots of
anime have feminine guys that you just can't believe is a guy no matter how hard
you try >___> ... Must be a fetish or something
Fushigi Yuugi was the series that really got me into anime.
Because of that, I'm sort of scared to rewatch it. It's been a long time, and
I'm afraid it'll loose its cachet if I watch it again from a far different
perspective. I mean, it's such cliche shoujo...

oh, remembering the shoujo series I've read, has anyone read "Zodiac P.I."? it's this 4-volume series about a girl solving mysteries using the Zodiac star signs. It's quite cute actually, the art style looks a little bit like Arina Tanemura's (sorta), and the chibis are just adorable.
how long does it take for you to read a manga? it usually takes me forever, esp for series with pretty and detailed art (like most shoujo series...). Instead of keep on reading, I sit there and stare at the art (and the chibis) instead of reading. My friends are like, "you're still on that page"?! Fruits Basket is esp slow for me, since I like staring at the art >__< Basara too (I love that manga series, I can only find up to vol 11 though...)

w00t, I can finally see my name on this layout
Hehe my fav Sailor Scout was Mercury and Chibi Moon. I wasn't a big fan of Serena either. If I was to watch Sailor Moon for the first time now I'd find it sooo lame. If I ever did watch it again, because it's my first anime, it holds a somewhat sentimental value in my eyes, and well, I'd find it amusing - though probably not for the reasons they were aiming for (for example 'I know the secret identity of the Sailor Scouts!'
good times).
When we got Cardcaptors, I think we got the American version bar the opening and ending themes - which I'm glad because when I saw then later they were quite horrible. I'm kind of used to the English dub - but then I haven't seen much of the Jap version at all (bar the opening and ending themes). If I was to rewatch Cardcaptors, I'd still like it, but I'd get bored with it after a few eps, so I'd have to watch odd one here and there.

The first manga I ever saw was that of Sailor Moon - and because I found the style weird (I didn't appreciate her style much back then) I was turned off all manga. It wasn't until I saw Clamp artworks that I could begin to see the beauty in manga artworks - and you know, funnily enough, I think Alice 19th happened to be the first manga I read too - or at least wanted to read. At that time, there were only fansubs on the net and for me not even that - just a script translation with no pictures. Still, I wanted to read it.
- which has made me realize that a reedit in my sound section of Alice 19th was necessary.
[Really, I think we should perhaps provide some guidelines about what to feature in good reviews on the front page, especially sound in manga x_X. I was also thinking perhaps coming up with a word list, because I know I tend to use the same words to describe things. So much so that, it can can get to a point where you are reading reviews and words have lost all meaning.
Like nice - what does that mean anymore?! DX]
*cough* I do seemed to get sidetracked don't I?
The first manga series I really started to read was FMA and Bleach. It was only recently I started getting into manga.
oh yeah, I remember I watched Sailor Moon when I was ten. it was on TV after school, and it was dubbed, but I liked the pretty eyes and the costumes
The
transformation sequence and the repetitiveness didn't bother me back then
(though
I did remember I didn't like "Serena" too much). It's also my first
attempt at "fanart", as I remember trying to draw the big anime
eyes.
I also remember watching Saint Seiya (Knights of the Zodiac) when I was little (maybe 7 or something?), 'cept I didn't remember what series it was or too much about it, until I watched it again a few years ago and thought, hey, I've seen this before; this is the series I watched when I was little! I guess that's the first anime that I remember I watched
(there
are probably others that I don't remember the names of or much about).
Oh yeah, I rmemeber watching Cardcaptor Sakura on TV too, it was the dubbed version, but not the butchered dubbed version
. It's
also the first series I've ever watched in Japanese (which was really really
weird at first
)
I think I'd still like CCS if I rewatched it (esp the second movie), Sailor Moon, I'm not sure. Saint Seiya I'd probably find corny now
What's the first manga you've ever read? Mine was... Ah My Goddess I believe. Found it in the library one day and was shocked they had manga (this was a few years ago, now the collection's much bigger). It was the flipped version. But I think the series that really got me into reading manga was actually Alice 19th ^^
Oh btw, I heard that Pokemon (or maybe it was Digimon) is actually Korean, I think. there's actually a few of these "American anime" out there, such as Avatar (which is actually not bad), Martin Mystery etc. They look anime-ish, but are made in the west.

oh yeah, about shoujo, I used to like shoujo a lot, it was most of what I watched/read (other than Inuyasha). But since Gundam SEED, I started watching other things, and now, a lot of shoujo is becoming er.... not as interesting as before
Happy New Year!
Sailor Moon.
That was what got me hooked onto anime - and Samuari Pizza Cats - please someone tell me they remembered that show? I loved them! Though of course, being the first animes to be dubbed America changed them something silly from names, flipping of scenes to the extreme where the entire jap script of SC was scrapped and a totally new one written...
Anyways, as I didn't know it was anime back then (because, you know I was 6) anime watching pretty much stopped until Pokemon came on - yes I'm sad to admit that I was a Pokemon fan - but then I didn't know it was anime either.
On a side note: I never really got into Digimon... I was always confused whether or not that was an anime, because sometimes I thought it was just America's answer to anime... I watch some new American animation now and you can see the Jap influences (such as the background action scenes etc.). But I suppose anime had it's influences from Disney (with the big eyes)...
Anyways
on my 'rise to anime spiel
'
There was also the beginning of anime dubs such as DBZ, Gundam Wing and Cardcaptors. I loved those too.
It wasn't until I was about 15/16 that I started to discover what anime was really all about and began finding my own things - even if it was just images, of course things like 'Adult Swim' helped me to find 'mature' anime (really, why is Inuyasha in Adult Swim?).
As for opinion changes - ah yes so true: there came a time I would like whatever anime I could get my hands on just for the simple reason it was anime. Now that my horizons have been broadened I find myself being much pickier.
Oh and I wish everyone a very Happy New Year!
Inuyasha was totally my calling into anime... I'd watched Pokemon and all those Digimon series before, but I started really getting obessessed with Inuyasha...
There's these phases where you're totally into it, and then you think it's childish and dumb, but I think that if I rewatch it I'll still like it.
It bothers me that all the kiddie watchers make out Kikyo to be such a "slut" and a "bitch"...
Fushigi Yuugi along with Shoujo Kakumei Utena were the two series that really threw me into my "shoujoboy" persona. My friends were always on and about with Gundam Wing and Dragonball Z and then I went and bought those and Sakura Taisen one weekend and was like "Hey guys, I got these new shows and they were awesome" After describing them thats when I got plastered with shoujoboy. Ahhh I love it. A joke name became my claim to fame... or claim to lame.
Lol, maybe I'm just weird?!
But
yeah, I watched it in the middle of a whole bunch of other series, so I found it
cliche. But one of the main reasons I'm annoyed with it is the melodrama, it's
like watching a soap opera
and the constant "Tamahome" "Miaka" shouting doesn't
help... yes, we know those are your names. Thanks.
Hmm, the anime that got me into anime would be... Inuyasha I'd say. I was obsessed with it. And I still like it to an extent I supposed. Kinda bored with it after a while though since it just never ends and keeps on repeating itself. And yes, the whole "Inuyasha" "Kagome" shouting annoys me as well. Maybe it's 'cause I saw Inuyasha first than FY that I found FY annoying (even though FY was made first, and it could be said that Inuyasha copied FY) ^^;;
Funny how your opinion changes over time. Maybe one day when I'm really bored (and I mean really bored), I might rewatch something like Fushigi Yuugi to see if my opinion has changed or not.... But I'm kind of the type of person who either really loves something and gets obsessed with it *coughgundamseedcough* or really dislike it and don't want to give it a chance for opinion to change ^^;;;

Lol, you're talking about Nuriko, right? you're not the only one, it took me a while to get used to that as well... But nowadays, lots of anime have feminine guys that you just can't believe is a guy no matter how hard you try >___> ... Must be a fetish or something
Fushigi Yuugi was the series that really got me into anime.
Because of that, I'm sort of scared to rewatch it. It's been a long time, and I'm afraid it'll loose its cachet if I watch it again from a far different perspective. I mean, it's such cliche shoujo...
