@Temarigenius: O yea, the Earthsea novels are good. I agree with Aozoraskies'
opinion on them. Howewver, a little warning though. It is rather umm... heavy. I
mean, if you're expecting to have a lighthearted and fun fantasy feeling like
the ones on other Ghibli works, then you won't find it. Although it has some
kind of similarity with Princess Mononoke...
@Aozoraskies: Ooh you've read almost all of Diana Wynee Jones books!? Mee too!
*excited* Erm... About Howl, I kind of prefered him more bad tempered. I mean,
in the movie he was childish alright (I remembered that hilarious scene when he
got real upset when his hair color changed ) But, in the
book he's...devilishly charming and more twisted. In the movie he's like
transformed to a kakkoi bishie with a dark secret not
that it's a bad thing, but then that's it. There's nothing more to him.
Right let's change topic Does
anyone know what's the next Ghibli project?
Hey there! I'm aozoraskies and I'm here because, well,( this doesn't take much
figure out), I'm a fan of Studio Ghibli! Not only that, I have read the first
four books of Earthsea, and almost all of Diana Wynne Jones' books. ^.^ Like
gabychan! And I loved them! Of the movies, I have watched Spirited Away and
Howl's Moving Castle. Unfortunately I haven't got the chance to watch the
others...but I want to. Really badly. Just point me the way to clear enough
versions online and I will.
Salma! Why didn't you tell me about this group!? Haha. Never mind, I found it on
my own.. apparently. :P Yes, there's a sequel. It's called Castle in the Air.
It's kind of different from Howl's Moving Castle, as it is not all focused on
Howl and Sophie. But they're there all right. It's just not so obvious.. I kind
of preferred it to Moving Castle for a few reasons.
1) More journeying! I'm a sucker for the experiences of new lands through
books.. And Diana Wynne Jones' style journeying is kind of fun. ^.^
2) I get the feeling that Jones had more time to develop the book..because
unlike the first, there's definitely an improvement as there's no obvious sudden
drag in the middle..then again, I myself had more time to read Castle in the Air
as it was in the library, handily.
3) More in depth with characters.. and a look at the other side of the
battlelines . Romance was also present from the beginning, thankfully..
Gabychan: Yup, from I heard, the movie's different.. But the Earthsea book
really gave this old, fantasy feel yet had rather real characters, IMO. And I
loved looking at maps at that time, so it was a joy. ^.^ By the way, loved your
new work. I got the same sort of feeling when reading Earthsea when I saw it;
subtle excitement, little details, hidden emotions..that sort of thing. Sigh,
too bad I lost the third e-book.... Yes, in Howl's, Sophie is definitely a
stronger person than in the movie. In fact, I felt that Sophie actually was
strengthen when she transformed into an old, weak lady...in the movie, I mean.
In the book, she was made out to be prettier, wilder and had red hair, right?
And a little magical secret.. missed that. It kind of linked everything
together.. Howl is more bad-tempered too...
Hi, abul. Glad to see a group that you haven't left yet. ^.^ Do stay,
please!
Ne, fantasyillusion, remember me..I'm in Rainfalling Love too. you know, the one
ranting about books with Salma and Aali . ^_^;
Temarigenius, the vector teacher...please to see you. *bows* No, not all of them
are based on books..
kashikosa...archaeology? Cool... must be exciting sometimes.. but have to handle
stuff REAL careful.. don't want it to be like the terracota knights; their
colours faded off. Which was a shame.. Hey now, I remember where I saw you. You
were the one who was doing the same vector as Scott (xAnime4Life)! My
sympathies.. as much as I like Scott's, I would have liked to see yours..
To everyone; muahaha! Feel the horror of aozora's ultra-long posts! Nah, just
kidding .. :P I'm going to sit for exams in a few weeks so I won't be able to do
this all the time anyway. Just a forewarning though: when exams draw near, I go
hyper-sensitive. I don't mean, like crying and all that. But I seemed to
subconsciously try to distract myself and analyse everything and outdo myself
with art. It's good for my doujinshi; but for my studies? Doubtful..
Hope I get accepted here! I'm still considered as aspirant at the other HMC
group after so long...

Oops...of course, abul's staying, he's an admin. Sorry! *bows*
By the way, may I know why the font has to be all capitals up there? I kind of
like what I see in this comment box/quick reply...
i read howl's moving castle and ididnt hat eit. i actually liked it. it was like
a separate book, not related to the movie in any way. there's a sequel to it? i
really wanna read it now...
Hi everyone I'm new here. Thanks for the invite Temarigenius.
I love most of Ghibli movies. Especially Spirited Away, Totoro, and Princess
Mononoke ^_^
I have read the novels Howl's Moving Castle (by Diana Wynne Jones) and Tales
from Earthsea (by Ursula Le Guinn). I must say, the Ghibli version is very
different from the novels. Both the novel version and the movie version of Howl
are good in their own way. The novel have more solid characterization, Howl is
more human and charming in his own way while Sophie feels stronger and
independent than in the movie.
As for Tales from Earthsea, the movie is a total let down for those who have
read the novels. Ged should play a bigger role in the movie IMO.
Now I feel like the major I'm going to pick is boring
I wanna have fun in Uni too
Indiana Jones!?
I actually didn't know that Ghibli movies have novels... Makes me
wanna read books
Hey.. I also didn't know that Ghibli movies have manga...
@temari: LoL People usually think Uni is hard Yeah,
basically you only gain experience. Yeah I love my teacher, because now I have
more time to spend with my friends and on MT Archaeology
is fun if one likes to spend their time either in the library or the laboratory
or digging in dirt. (OK, I love it itmakes me
feel like Indiana Jones, but competent )
No, not all Ghibli movies are based on novels, but many are - Hotaru no Haka,
Hauru, GedoSenki for example. Nausicaa is based on a manga by Miyazaki-sensei so
it's a completely original idea. Same thing with, for example Laputa.
@fantasyillusion: Well... the thing I hated most in the book was umm... the
plot.... it made Hauru look so well... irritating!
I see... I thought that Uni is really hard
And then I asked my mother and she said that Uni is just for one to gain
experience
Your teacher is so good~ He gav you free time now =3
Is archaeology fun?
Hmm... All Ghibli movies have a novel? Or are based on novels?
@fantasyillusion: Of course you can join us! And I totally agree - the movie
Howl was much, much better than the book (and OMG did you read the second
volumes - it was a disaster!)
@phoenixalcott: Of course you can join - this is what we are here
@temari: Not working in Uni depends on the subject you choose - if it's medicine
you work as hell, but most of them actually just increase your knowledge from
before adding some new details (for me it's basically nothing 'cause when I
decided I wanted to study archaeology my teacher admitted he wanted to study
that, so he taught me most of the things I'm studying now... So I'm rather
bored). And yeah maybe you have to be smart to get to a good Uni, but it isn't
as hard as you think
Uni doesn't make us smart? But then you
need to be smart to go into a good uni
In Uni you don't have to do much things right?
Oh noo... I need to read books..
Lol, me neither... but I have quite a lot of brochures (including some from
Japan from my friend) and articles about SG
@temari: don't believe Uni will make you smart - it seriously is only to
formalise your education so far with a degree... I've been studying in the best
Uni in my country for 2 years and so far they only taught me how to put the
smallest amount of effort into studying, just to pass the exams and get it over
with (no books needed)... and before going to Uni I always LOVED learning...
lol im not a reader but i definitely read more than 40 books in my life and 10
sounds so.... funny im lol *hides
from temari-chan*
well i dont plan to read the book since i didnt like the movie and i dont think
that ill like the book
plus i dont feel like reading books that base movies because when u read the
book u imagine things in ur own way and when u read the book after watching a
movie you:
a) know exactly what will happen
b) cant imagine things as u'd imagine if u never watched the movie
hey arent we supposed to be talking about ghibli
well heres my question:
does anyone have any artbook/manga/film comic from studio ghibli?
Oh no... *Fixes kashikosa's heart*
Sigh... You should blame my lack of knowledge...
Actually I don't even know who Ursula K. LeGuin is... I'm a literature
idiot...
But since you said that it's good... I guess I'll get the book if I see it in
the book store next time =3
I've probably of read around 10+ books in my whole life... I read books but I
can't finish them...

Gyaah! Temari-chan you've just pierced my heart and broke my soul... How can you
not know Ursula K. LeGuin's masterpiece, (even the first volume...?!) It's a
classic, it is in the basic literature! *calming down* no matter... it may be
just me... if you ever get around to reading it, you may just like it...
*waaii... why so many of my friends recently tell me they don't like reading sob
sob sob*
Tales of Earthsea is from a novel!?
I didn't know that... Maybe I'll read it someday... But I hate reading books...
Oh yea, I forgot that Totoro is the Spirit of the Forest... I watched it when I
was really young.
But Totoro is so cute~ It should be categorized into the animal section X3
Oh yea, there's also the cat bus~ I remember having a small cat bus doll
Abul, you are only 16, so why throw away your childhood?
I'm 16 this year and I don't plan to throw my childhood~
Wow Abul... You are going to university already? Did you jump grade? I still
have 2 years to go till University...
@abul: you're being waay to strict with your definition of animal I call an
animal everything that is in some way attached to humans and is not another
human
You should seriously think of your childhood as a mental state and not a precise
time. That way you'll be a brat like me forever
quick comment:
totoro is not an animal but the forest spirit
and i do believe that hnh is a huge trauma for a 10 years old
yes, i do think my childhood is gone: im 16, im finishing school in 2 months, im
going to university in 4 months, my older brother already has a child and my
elder sisters dont live with me anymore
etc etc etc etc
so yeah, my childhood is already gone
@abul & temari: Lol, earthsea's plotline is only understandable for people
who read 'The farthest shore' and 'Tehanu' by Ursula K. LeGuin (these are the
3rd and 4th vol from Tales of Earthsea) so if you haven't read it - it might be
a hard movie... (the music is awesome ) Personally
I like GedoSenki cause it's a nice attempt at making a movie out of a series of
books VERY HARD to turn into a movie.
@abul: believe me, for a 10 year old watching Hotaru no Haka was pretty
traumatic so I needed something mostly cute to heal the mental wound... so
cuteness was a really good thing...
Your childhood is gone...? Funny I thought I was older than you and I still
enjoy my childhood
@temari: no idea if totoro qualifies as an animal, but I would say chu-totoro
and chibi-totoro definitely do... And yeah
whispers of the heart is very underrated and yet is very sweet
My Totoro wall: Totoro's Magic Sprout

It's my favorite scene of Totoro
@Temarigenius: O yea, the Earthsea novels are good. I agree with Aozoraskies' opinion on them. Howewver, a little warning though. It is rather umm... heavy.
